Tony Trischka Workshop and Concert
October 27, 2001 -- Vienna, Virginia
Sponsored by Capitol Area Bluegrass and Old-Time Music Association

Twenty three banjoists spent the day at the Tony Trischka workshop, eager to learn from the master. Tony excels at making everyone feel comfortable and he is very approachable. Topics covered use of a metronome, practice techniques, hammer-ons and pull-offs, melodic, Scruggs, Reno, minstrel and clawhammer styles, jamming, and proper banjo setup. The workshop was rich with exchange between Tony and the participants. All were very enthusiastic.

The evening one-man banjo concert was very well attended. Tony's material followed the evolution of banjo music and covered early minstrel, clawhammer, bluegrass, and progressive. His banjos included a gourd banjo, a Flesher minstrel, a custom Deering openback, a one-of-a-kind dobro banjo and a Stelling. Murphy Henry was in attendance and joined Tony for the conclusion of the concert. After the concert, someone said what all of us were thinking. "You were sure right about Tony's banjo virtuosity. He was fantastic! He seems like a great guy, too. Thanks for putting me on to the gig....I had a great time."

The time went too quickly.

"And Earl does it THIS way."
